Sailor Jerry has even petitioned for this day to be recognized as a paid holiday for bartenders. This date was chosen strategically, as it falls during peak times for bartenders, including Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve, and Fridays. To honor those who work in the bartending industry, Sailor Jerry Rum established Bartender Appreciation Day, which takes place in early December. This led to the emergence of bartending schools and an increased number of individuals pursuing careers in the industry. One such creation during this time was the gin and tonic.Īfter the repeal of Prohibition, bars and cocktail lounges started popping up all over the country. Jerry Thomas, a well-known bartender of the time, reportedly earned more than the Vice President of the United States.ĭuring the 20th century, the Prohibition era in the United States banned the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages, leading to the closure of famous bars and the rise of illegal speakeasies. In the 19th century, bartending in America underwent significant changes and became a respected profession, even offering high-paying opportunities. As colonialism expanded in the New World, bartenders emerged as well. Over time, taverns and similar establishments became important meeting places for authors and professionals, leading to an increase in social status for bartenders.
